BYU Hawaii Religion 130 Course Description

STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


  1. Student will prepare himself/herself for missionary service by learning doctrines and principles of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ obtained through the scriptures and living prophets.

  2. Student will develop a testimony of Jesus Christ, and a desire to be like Him.

  3. Student will develop teaching skills and confidence that will allow him/her to teach by the Spirit. “Teach Ye Diligently…Seek learning, even by study and also by faith” (D&C 88:118).

  3. Preach My Gospel

  4. Approved Missionary Library: (Optional): Jesus the Christ, Our Search for Happiness, Our Heritage and True to the Faith. (The first two books can also be found online at http://gospelink.com/library/alpha )


CLASS REQUIREMENTS:


  1. Attendance, participation and presentations (300 points)

Much of what you gain from this course will come from your participation in class and sharing gospel principles with others. Please join in the discussions. Credit will only be given for your being present for the entire class. More than seven absences constitute an automatic failure. When you have an excused absence, (serious illness or family emergency), you must notify the instructors in advance, or as soon as possible.



  1. Personal study and journal keeping (105 points) 7 x 15 points

You will need a study journal in a hard-cover notebook in which you record the results of your personal scripture study and special Gospel insights gained from class sessions, devotionals and spiritual meetings. Your journal should include special feelings and impressions that come to you as you daily ponder and feast upon the Word. This should also include a section on “Points to Ponder” found in each chapter of your manual that you have written about. This will be turned in every other Wednesday at the beginning of class, and given back after class that day.


  1. Devotionals (210 points) – 14 Devotionals x 15 points

We expect you to attend all the devotionals and the convocation during the semester. At the end of each devotional, prepare a one page summary (preferably typed) of your feelings regarding the major principles shared by the speakers. It will be important and very beneficial to you to be receptive and listen to the Spirit. Please bring this to class by the following Monday. (You may bring this to class on Wednesday morning after the devotional as well.)


  1. PERIODIC QUIZZES (160 points) 4 quizzes x 40 points

These quizzes will include material you have studied from your readings each day.


6. EXTRA CREDIT (100 points, maximum)

a. You may memorize missionary related scriptures in the Scriptures to Study and Ponder sections in the student manual, and pass them off to your instructor. You may also memorize D&C 4, The Standard of Truth, and My Missionary Commission. (10 points each).


b.You may also read the approved missionary library; Jesus the Christ, Preach My Gospel, Our Search for Happiness, Our Heritage, and True to the Faith, and other missionary related books: The Miracle of Forgiveness, by Spencer W. Kimball, A Witness and a Warning, by Ezra Taft Benson, The Infinite Atonement, by Tad Callister. You need to prepare a 2-3 page review (type written) on each book. (50 points per book review up to a maximum of 100 points.)


7. FINAL EXAM (200 points)

Wednesday, Dec. 10 (7-10AM in Testing Center.) Will include all materials we have covered. Will be open book.



CLASS PROCEDURE


  1. Each class will open with a prayer by invitation.

  2. To invite the Spirit, each day a student will be asked to share a missionary experience he/she has had recently.

  3. From time to time you and your companion will be asked to demonstrate your teaching skills by each teaching a principle from the missionary lessons we have studied.
